Day 4!

So today was our first team work day and let me just say, this team DID WORK!! We are building two homes this week for families in need and houses are built on stilts which makes everything a little more interesting! When we got there the basic prep work had been done which consists of 12 pillars in the ground and then 4 long 6x6 beams each running across 3 of the pillars. Hard to explain but that's what basically serves as the stilt structure. So from there our team framed in the whole floor (just like framing a wall but it's over the entire floor) on both houses! And that was just before lunch! After lunch we got back to work and started putting the actual flooring boards down. These boards are a tongue and groove system so it requires some precise squaring of the boards and leverage to get the flooring tightly together. One of the houses floor is done and other only needs 5 more boards on it. The amazing thing was the teams excitement and perseverance because all that wood that we put up had to be carried from the base down the street to the worksite! That plus some heavy rainstorms mixed in and the challenge of HARD wood/SOFT nails which is very different from building in the US where the wood is soft and the nails are hard! The team did amazing though and pressed through all the crooked nails to get a lot done! Back at it tomorrow!

  1. Yay Team! What a great amount of progress you've managed. Each of you is impressive and look what you've accomplished together! You have my sympathy with the soft nails. Praying everyone's fingers and thumbs don't get hammered badly. Your sacrifice of energy & vacation is being noticed here at home as well as there in Port. 3 work places, my PT's office and friends are all asking for reports and cheering you on! so when you get tired or discouraged, pause a moment, take a deep breath, say a prayer and know that somewhere, someone is wishing to encourage you. And as always God's there to lean on and has His arms around you and His spirit ready to fill yours. Love you Bethany! Hugs to Derek, Sammi O and Alex. Also Thanks so much Huffy for being the Go-to person for 'my girls'.

  3. Good job guys! I totally get the hard wood soft nails thing. Had the same problem when building our home in Belize 31 yrs ago. 4 nails for every one you actually got in.
Praying for even more favor in the upcomming days.

  7. Great work Nicaragua team! so happy your first work day was a success! love hearing about all of these amazing things happening for you guys down there. Can't wait till pictures are uploaded and I can see you guys doing all of this. Hope the rest of the week goes spectacular and you continue to spread the word of God to everyone and you become closer to him in the process. Ok so I am still not very good at this blog thing yet. Im pretty sure I accidently send what I write to people I don't know and then I have to retype it all. So I just now realized how many people are on this trip. I'm gonna have to step it up on the shout outs. So todays winners are........ Mariah and Cory!
Hiiiii Mariah! I hope you are having such an incredible time in Nicaragua! How's yours and Dalton's relationship going? Last time I checked you bot still seemed pretty in love. Hope it's still working out for you. Id understand if it wasn't though. I mean it's dalton. Haha just kidding. Hope you guys stay strong as a couple and continue on loving eachother. Haha and to everyone that's now like there together? I'm just kidding. She can do way better anyway. Jk love you dalton<3 well I hope your week continues on being amazing Mariah!
Cooooorrrrryyyy! I am so happy that you ended up being able to go on this trip! I'm sure everyone is loving the fact that you are there! Have you peed yourself yet? If not that's ashame. And hopefully you aren't having the same issues as last year haha. Oh by the way you still owe me five dollars. Just saying. I know you don't think so but lets face it we both know you do. Ok auto correct is really making me mad. I continue to read back what I typed and it doesn't make any sense because it thinks I meant to toe something else. Like that for instense. I meant to right type and it gave me toe. Computers just think they are so smart and know what you want to say. Ok well I'm done ranting. Love you city. It did it again! I typed Cory and it changed it to city! Ok now in done. Love you cory! Hope the rest of your week goes well! As to everyone else!

  10. Cory, I again say if you can build 2 houses in a week you really should be able to clean your room in a day right???:) Just saying!! Had a GREAT talk tonight with Aaron about God and I believe that he is finally at the place that he realizes how much He needs God in his life.....so while God is at work in Nicaragua and the hearts of all of you and all of those you will minister to this week, He is also at work in the heart of your brother here in Mishawaka, Indiana! Praise almighty God who reigns supreme!! Love and miss you tons!! Mom

  11. Hello amazing team of awesome people!!!!

I so wanna build houses with you guys! I'm thinking about making a mini version of what you guys are building because it would be cool and would give me something to do. But not as cool as what you guys are doing. Sorry sometimes I just say things and then they don't make sense. Anyway, I'm so proud of you all! Keep working hard! Don't give up! Whenever I get tired or discouraged I start singing Dory's song "Just keep swimming." Mainly because I really like Finding Nemo. Yeah.

Hi Austin and Hunter. I hope you two aren't getting in trouble. I wonder who you're picking on since I'm not there. Haha.
Katie Fields! BGP! I love you! Embrace that heat!

It was fun, not too crowded, and the sun finally came out about 4:45pm. We all miss you tons around here. I am making all the food you don't like while you are gone, and also cleaned your room! Hope you are having a great trip reconnecting with old friends, and making a difference as you always do. Love you-Mom

Sounds like you guys are doing some real tough guy work! Can't wait to see all your new muscles when you return. Make sure you let the guys carry some of that wood-it's only fair to share the fun jobs!

I'm very anxious to hear if any of your young friends from last year are still there, and how your reunion with them went.

I'm also excited to hear how your training from Ron impacts the week. Just remember to forget that one part he said-and do just what your Dad says, "stay with your group!" : )

    We Love You Very Much,

  39. To my GSM family,

I read this today and thought of you guys:

"For 'Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?"
    Romans 10:13-14

You all are such an inspiration to me. I see Jesus living through you by your hard work, determination, actions, words, and servant hearts. Keep doing what you're doing, so proud to be a part of the GSM family with you all! Keep loving and serving and giving everything you have. Keep telling others about Jesus by what you say and do. You may be the only Bible they'll ever read. Follow Him, and love will light the way! So proud of you guys :)

    Much love,
    Megan
